PopClip Privacy Policy
Introduction
I am Nicholas Moore, a sole trader in the United Kingdom doing business using the trading name Pilotmoon Software. I run an independent software business and make my income by selling Mac apps. I have no interest in gathering your personal data, tracking you, or targeting ads at you. I only collect information as necessary to provide PopClip and its supporting services to you.
Buying a license key
When you buy a license key for PopClip, your order will be processed by a reseller. I use Paddle as my reseller worldwide and Digitalychee in China. The reseller will pass me your name and email address, which will be encoded as part of your license key. I retain this information so I can help you if you contact me about an order.
Subscribing via Setapp
PopClip is also available through the Setapp subscription platform. When you access PopClip via Setapp, your usage is subject to Setapp's privacy policy. Setapp does not pass me your personal details.
Using PopClip
Some features of PopClip involve access to the internet. I do not want to be responsible for storing sensitive data, so PopClip is designed to avoid sending sensitive data to my own servers wherever possible. PopClip never sends any data away from your device except as described below, or where explicitly indicated within the app.
Using extensions
PopClip offers the ability to install extensions that interact with third-party services on the internet. All such communication occurs directly between your device and the third party using secure HTTPS APIs; my servers do not act as an intermediary. Your use of these extensions is subject to the policies of the relevant third-party services.
Stored secrets
Some extensions save secrets such as passwords, auth tokens, or API keys. PopClip stores these secrets in Apple's secure iCloud Keychain. Stored secrets are never sent to my servers.
iCloud sync
PopClip includes iCloud sync functionality backed by Apple's CloudKit infrastructure. CloudKit syncs your installed extensions, actions layout, and action settings (except secrets). Access to sync is via your iCloud account (as set up in System Settings) and is subject to Apple's privacy policies.
Icon library access
PopClip includes icons from Iconify, a library of open source icons. PopClip retrieves icon files directly from Iconify's servers (api.iconify.design). Iconify's privacy policy applies.
Automatic updates
PopClip includes automatic update functionality. When auto-update is on, the app will periodically contact my web server (softwareupdate.pilotmoon.com for app updates, and public.popclip.app for extension updates) to see if any updates are available. Update checking sends the information listed in App profile data. You can disable update checking within the app's preferences.
Upgrade eligibility checks
PopClip includes buttons that link to discounted license upgrade offer pages hosted on my website. These links embed the information listed in App profile data.
App profile data
PopClip sends the following information to my servers when performing update checks and generating upgrade links:
- app installation identifier (a random GUID generated per install)
- macOS version
- app version and edition
- preferred system language
- App Store country code
- App Store purchase date (if applicable)
- license key identifier (a SHA1 hash of your license key, if applicable)
This data is processed for the purpose of understanding installed user base statistics, validating upgrade eligibility, and detecting leaked license keys.
Crash reporting
PopClip has crash reporting functionality. If a crash occurs, the app will send the technical details of the crash to me to help me fix it. Crash reports are sent directly to my server (crashreport.pilotmoon.com).
Log files
PopClip keeps local log files for debugging and diagnostic purposes. These logs may record the actions you take within the app. All log files stay on your device.
